Summary:
The study aimed to assess the epidemiological
characteristics of measles and rubella in the
northern region of Vietnam from 2007 to 2011 to
draw out the lessons learned in manages on disease
prevention activities. The epidemiological caseseries
study was carried out. The results show
high measles incidence in the age group 20-24
and 0-4, 28.1% and 25.6% respectively, of which,
most received only one dose of vaccine, compare
to those who have more likely to received more
than 2 doses of vaccine, we see the low incidence
in age group 5-9, 10-14, 15-19 (12.6%, 3.3% and
15.1% respectively). Most cases of rubella in
the group 10-14 age (28.0%) and the proportion
of rubella cases in women of childbearing age
tended to increase in this study period. The
epidemiological characteristics of measles and
rubella were varied by space and time. While the
major age groups affected by rubella were 10-14
and 15-19 years old yearly, there were several
shifts in age of measles distribution from group
15-19, 20-24 years old to group 0-4, 5-9 during
the period of 2008-2010. The results also show
that measles vaccination activities have generally
protected vaccination targets. However, it is
needed to consider for the shift in the space and
the age distribution over time when planning an
vaccination campaign
