Trachomatuos trichiasis in people 50 year and older in 16 provinces and cities Viet Nam
Summary:
Objective: To study the situation of
trachomatous trichiasis in people 50 year
and older, to estimate the rate of trichiasis,
with 3 or ≥ 4 distichiatic hairs. Subjects:
people 50 year and older, diagnosed with
trichiasis secondary to trachoma, haved
lived for more than 6 months in the
communities of 16 provinces, representing
8 different ecological regions of Vietnam.
Methods: descriptive cross – sectional
study, collect the date trichiasis with survey
on preventable blindness. 60 groups of 30
subjects over the age of 50 were chosen in
each province. Evaluation criteria include:
people with 3 distichiatic hairs and people
with more than 3 distichiatic hairs. Results:
The survey coverage is 97.4% higher than the requirement of WHO (above 90%).
The proportion of patient with less than
3 distichiatic hairs is 1.4%, these patients
does not need to be operated but still need
to be followed up and removed distichiatic
hair. Trichiasis group accounted for 2% of
the investigated population, we estimate
that over the whole population there would
be 250,000 cases of Trichiasis so the rate is
0,3%, higher than the eliminating trichiasis
standards of WHO (<0.1%). Conclusion:
The rate of trichiasis in the community is
rather high, about 250,000 cases. This is a
big challenge for the blindness prevention
mission.
