Summary:
A cross-sectional study identifed the prevalence occupational injuries based on the
existing administrative OSH data collected by the national hospital system with a focus on age, sex, sector/occupation, time and location. Research used the secondary data and reviewed documents related to the notifcation and reporting system of occupational injuries in Vietnam. A total of 27,865 occupational accidents were notifed from 37 provinces (from Departments of Health, Centres for Preventive
Medicine, Centers for Disease Control, Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health) and data from 11 hospitals nationwide in 2017 were reviewed, synthesized and analysed by the research team. The study results showed young workers experienced a 25 per cent higher rate of occupational injuries than other worker
age groups. Male young workers suffered from occupational injuries 4.08 times or 408% higher rate than female ones. Young workers’ occupational injuries reached the highest rate in the summer. In 2017, among 37 provinces/ cities’ reports sent on occupational injuries through health facilitities, Binh Duong recorded the most. Occupational injury rate among young workers recorded the highest in farming.
Young female farming workers suffered a 16 per cent higher rate of occupational injuries than male workers. Conclusion: The study result is reaffrms the high vulnerability of young workers at work. However, the existing data is not adequate and accurate to fully describe characteristics of young workers’ injuries, especially by occupation and province. The recording system of occupational injuries should be further reviewed nationwide.
