Summary:
Japanese Encephalitis (JE) is an acute viral
infection caused by the Flavivirus Japanese
Encephalitis virus and is transmitted to humans
through the bite of infected mosquitoes. To
date, more than 12 mosquito species have been
identified to be able to transmit JEV, among
which, Culex (Cx.) tritaeniorhynchus, Cx.
vishnui and Cx. gelidus are the primary JEV
vectors. We have conducted household mosquito
surveys and larval surveys in aquatic habitats
surrounding the houses in target JE districts in
Son La, Dien Bien and Lao Cai provinces from
May to July, 2018. The results showed that in
3 Northwest provinces, 8 mosquito species of
5 genera were collected, in which the two main
JEV vectors, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus and Cx.
vishnui, were dominant (68.48%). The mosquito
density index for Cx. tritaeniorhynchus and
Cx. vishnui in pig/cattle shelter (3.36-21.28
mosquitoes/shelter for Cx. tritaeniorhynchus
and 0.12-7.74 mosquitoes/shelter for Cx.
vishnui) were higher than in-house density index
(19.5 times for Cx. tritaeniorhynchus and 11.8
times for Cx. vishnui). Larvae of JE vectors were
collected from rice fields, water ditches, small
puddles and household water storages, in which
rice fields were the main habitat (81.8% Cx.
tritaeniorhynchus larvae and 98% Cx. vishnui
larvae collected). Mosquito collection locations,
type of community, water level and aquatic
plants are associated with the development of
mosquito and larval populations. The presence
and wide geographical distribution of JEV
vectors in Northwest provinces are data base
for the development of effective prevention and
control of viral encephalitis, including Japanese
Encephalitis.
